Glanville fritillary

Melitaea cinxia - Conservation status (Denmark): Vulnerable (VU) - High risk of endangerment in the wild
I just had to pick up some things my daughter had bought at an auction, but got a bit more with me than just some bought stuff - this little beautiful butterfly, which I have actually never seen before, even though it is quite common in Denmark.

In Denmark, it is found in Jutland and along Sjælland's north coast. In the 20th century Glanville fritillary has been declining. The species is seen on dry grasslands, where the larva mainly lives off Ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata).

The Glanville fritillary (Melitaea cinxia) is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is named for the naturalist who discovered it and the checkerboard pattern on its wings. These butterflies live mostly in Europe, especially Finland, and across temperate Asia.
