Small tortoiseshell is a very common butterfly in Denmark and has been appointed as the country's national butterfly. It announces spring and appears from wintering when the temperature in March rises above 8-10 degrees. It occurs everywhere, where nels grow and where there are suitable wintering places.

It is found throughout temperate Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia, Siberia, China, Mongolia, Korea and Japan, wherever common nettle which their larvae feed on is found. There are a few records from New York City which, however, are believed to be of introduced insects.
